Our History

Elma Steel and Equipment., know as "The Great Steel Place" established in 1970 by Jack and Rebecca Schildroth on their family farm in Elma Township, has provided the steel needs of customers in all of Central South-Western Ontario for over 30 years.

Jack Schildroth's knowledge of the steel industry is extensive. He worked for Dahmer Steel in Kitchener for 32 years beginning as a laborer and working his way up from a shear operator to top salesman for the company.

In the beginning, the Schildroth's specialized in supplying quantites of steel smaller than what larger companies wanted to be bothered with. The sale of steel tubing had not been promoted in the area and it became the firms first interest. Since then the demand has increased substantially and steel tubing is still a major part of the company's business.

In the early years, when Jack was still selling for Dahmer, there were days when Rebecca must have felt that she was handling the whole lot at once. Rebecca took orders, cut the iron and when her sons got home, would help load the truck using a tractor and front-end loader. When Jack got home, he and Rebecca would make the deliveries.

Today the company stocks over 1600 tons of steel and with the opening of another location in Owen Sound in Sept 2001 to further expand it's service area, truly making it "The Great Steel Place".
